Guam Quarter -- 2009 Quarters Proof Set Begins US Mint Year

By CoinNews.net on Jan 2nd, 2009 in Coin or Numismatic News, Featured Coin News Articles, New Coin Releases, United States Mint News and Information

United States Mint 2009 District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Quarters Proof SetThe United States Mint will begin selling 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Proof Sets for $14.95 each on Monday, January 5, at noon (ET).

The set includes the six proof 2009 quarters with reverse designs honoring the District of Columbia (D.C.), the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Demand for this annual set is typically strong. According to the latest sales figures, the US Mint sold 672,004 of the 2008-dated version. Current eBay auctions have prices listed that are nearly double that of what the Mint charged.

The new set replaces last year's 50 State Quarters Proof Set, which included five quarters for the price of $13.95. Similar to the 2008 state quarters, standard circulating versions of each are to be released in equal intervals throughout 2009. Additionally, the Mint will release forthcoming collector products to include silver versions of the quarters, an uncirculated set, and another proof set with all 2009 circulating coins.

How proof coins are different from circulating coins

The coins in each set are proof. The mint describes proof as,

" … a manufacturing process in which specially-treated coin blanks are struck multiple times using specially-polished dies. Proof coins-unlike coins produced for general circulation-are extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background. A frosted, sculpted foreground gives these coins a special cameo effect."

2009 Quarter Images for DC and US Territories

2009 Quarter Images for District of Columbia and US Territories

The United States Mint has unveiled proof 2009 quarter images depicting the themes honoring the District of Columbia and the five United States territories — D.C., Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The high resolution quarter images were not available at the time the 2009 Quarters Proof Set were issued in Jan., and offer an excellent presentation for how circulating quarters will look.

The Mint is already offering DC quarters in rolls and bags. The five other quarters will enter circulation in equal intervals spread throughout 2009.

2009 Guam Quarter

Guam

The third quarter of 2009, honoring the territory of Guam, includes an outline of the island of Guam, a latte stone-once used as building support in ancient Chamorro society-and a flying proa (a native boat).

Guahan I Tanó ManChamorro (Guam, Land of the Chamorro) is also inscribed on the coin's reverse.

Designer and Sculptor

The Guam quarter reverse was designed by United States Mint AIP Associate Designer David Westwood and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz.

Design Selection Process

Designs for each quarter were submitted and recommended through a process determined by the Governors for the District of Columbia and each United States territories. The U.S. Mint reviewed the designs before each Governor recommended a final design based mostly on a resident voting with some using a committee selection process. Both the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts were involved in improving designs while the Department of the Treasury selected each.

More information may be read though the US Mint page, The District of Columbia and United States Territories Quarter Program.

After the DC and US Territories Quarters Program ends in 2009, National Park Quarters will launch beginning in 2010.

Chamorro Public Service Post - I Love You

When I first started voyaging out into the internet full force several years ago, meaning I started using Google and Yahoo to search for random crap, interesting things would always pop up when I was looking for stuff related to Guam and Chamorros.

For instance, if you do just general Guam searches you will find a surprisingly alot of Gay community website. I never imagined Guam as some gay oasis in the Pacific, but apparently around the Pacific alot of people do think of Guam as just that.

Also, if you do just general searches for Chamorro, you will receive a bunch of sites for Chamorros in Nicaragua. These aren't ethnic Chamorros but people with the last name Chamorro, such as Edgar Chamorro, a contra fighter and former ambassador to the United Nations, or Violeta Chamorro, a President of Nicaragua in the 1990's.

When I would do searches for Chamorro language however, a certain type of page would constantly show up, "I Love You Pages." I'm sure that most of us have stumbled across these pages, they basically feature how to say "I Love You" in all the known languages in the universe. The real hard-core pages will not just have mainstream dialects like English, Spanish and Hindi, but will also have "disappearing" languages with smaller speech communities, like indigenous languages. The pages which are completely unstoppable, are those with either concocted or fictive speech communities like Esperanto, Klingon or Gallach from the Dune books.

Although creating a page like that of my own would really be as simple as copying and pasting one of the pages floating around out there, I decided to make a sort of similar page, with just a nice little indigenous inversion.

Here I'm proud to present, a sort of "I Love You Page," where I provide a list of different ways to say or express that you love someone in Chamorro.

Hu guaiya hao
I love you

Ya-hu Hao
I like you

Kinenne' yu' nu Hågu
I'm hooked (literally 'taken with') on you.

Un foyung yu'
You knock me down

Sinekkai yu' nu Hågu
I have a crush (literally 'snagged') on you

Un kahnåyi yu'
Un bewitch (literally 'cast a spell on') me

Bai hu gofli'e hao
I will care for you

Ti bai hu dingu hao
I will not leave you

Kao siña un såga na'ya?
Can you stay for a while?

Gof bunita hao
You are very beautiful

Ha penta i eriyå-hu siha mitkilot i binitå-mu
Your beauty paints the world around me with many colors

Todu i bidå-mu siha kulang milagro siha
Everything you do is like miracles

Un na'gofha'an todu i ha'ani-hu siha
You make sunny all my days

Taya' somnak an taigue hao
There's no sunshine if you're gone

Hagu i minagahet-hu
You are my truth

Ti bei maleffa i pinachå-mu
I won't forget your touch

Mafa'tinåsi hao nu Guahu.
You were made for me

Kada kinalamten-mu siha manmatuge' gi i hinasso-ku
Each of your movements is written into my memory

Gof mangguaiya yu'!
I'm really in love!

Hågu i guinefe-hu
You are my dream

Ni' håyi fuera di Hågu
No one but you

Hågu ha' i malago-hu
You are all I want

Ti siña yu' mumaigo put Hågu
I can't sleep because of you

Saipan's collapse one of fastest in US history-documentary

By Haidee V. Eugenio, Reporter
Saipan Tribune

From being the poster child of the ultimate globalization success story, Saipan now faces one of the fastest economic collapses in the history of the United States and the world, according to a new documentary on Current TV.

Current TV is a cable network founded by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore.

The documentary features the birth and death of the once billion-dollar Saipan garment industry. The two remaining garment factories-from three dozens less than 10 years ago-are set to close soon.

“What's happening on Saipan is an extreme compressed version of what's happening elsewhere in the U.S. and the world; like a lab test of what globalization does for good and ill,” American journalist Adam Yamaguchi said in his documentary.

Yamaguchi, along with fellow journalist Christine Huang, visited Saipan last year “to document the rise and sudden collapse of a tiny piece of America.”

The documentary, which runs for 25 minutes and 7 seconds, can be accessed at http://current.com/users/Adam_Yamaguchi/all/0.htm.

Viewers are shown footages of World War II, Saipan's pristine beaches, the remaining garment factories, empty garment factories and empty buildings like the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque, as well as interviews with government officials, former garment workers and local residents about their views and experiences about the collapse of the Sapan garment industry.

Richard Pierce, the governor's special assistant for trade relations and economic affairs, said the documentary is a fairly accurate depiction of Saipan, both old and current, and caters to the 20-30-year-old mainlanders by focusing on the “Made in the USA” label and the loss in American jobs as a result of the local industry.

“They were truthful in their introductions and plan to focus on the loss in this part of America to both global and federal forces outside our control,” he said, adding that Yamaguchi, Huang and young indigenous citizens in the documentary “could easily grasp what others in federal and local government offices have had difficulty understanding.”

“Saipan has lost so much, and will continue to lose more over time as a result of the demise of its once healthy apparel industry. Jobs are leaving in government and the private sector, in addition to the workers from the factories themselves,” said Pierce.

Pierce, a former executive director of the Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association and one of those interviewed in the documentary, added that Yamaguchi posed a very good question in his conclusion: “Why a part of America can't even hang on to a few low paying jobs?”

He, however, said that Yamaguchi overlooked one important point in discussing prostitution in the CNMI. “That is, that the U.S. mainland, Hawaii, Guam and other American soil do not accommodate prostitution in their travel industry zones.”

Battle of Saipan      25:07
Once the ultimate globalization success story, the island of Saipan now faces one of the fastest economic collapses in history. After suffering a harsh history of military struggles as well as a temporary economic boom after becoming a U.S. commonwealth, the island now stands devastated. Scores of factories remain empty, rotting shopping centers litter the country, and former factory workers turn to the sex industry for survival. Adam Yamaguchi visits Saipan to document the rise and sudden collapse of a tiny piece of America.
